CHARACTER INFO

Character: Commander (Jane) Shepard
Canon: Mass Effect 3 - Perfect Destroy ending
Age: 32

Background Information:

Born to a family of farmers on the human colony of Mindoir, Shepard's peaceful life was upturned at the age of sixteen when batarian slavers raided her home. Though her family fought back, an artillery strike killed everyone except for Shepard who was buried beneath the rubble and mistaken for a corpse by the raiders. Following the withdrawal of the batarians, Shepard was rescued by an Alliance (human navy) patrol that had attempted to intervene, but been outgunned. She signed up to the Alliance two years later.

Five years into her service, Shepard's unit was sent to the fledgeling colony of Akuze after losing all contact with the ground team. When the marines set up camp for the night, they were ambushed by a thresher maw - a gigantic subterranean worm. Shepard was, to everyone's knowledge at the time, the sole survivor of the unit and received much acclaim for this "feat".

The first Mass Effect game begins when Shepard is twenty nine, serving as XO aboard the new Alliance flagship SSV Normandy SR-1 under Captain Anderson.

Mass Effect Timeline from ME1

Personality:

TELL US ABOUT WHO YOUR CHARACTER IS AND WHAT SOMEONE'S FIRST IMPRESSION WOULD BE UPON MEETING THEM.

Shepard is a woman who clawed her way up the Alliance ranks to be the first human Spectre, repeatedly escaping death and seizing victory in unwinnable situations. When death did eventually sink its claws into her, she was yanked back to life and fought on until she gave it all to destroy the Reapers, saving organic life from their cyclical genocide.

Suffice it to say, Shepard has guts and luck in equal measure. She represents the very best of humanity: intelligent and adaptable, relentless in the pursuit of her goals, but not so much that she won't bend the rules in line with her moral compass. She's also incredibly stubborn. The Council won't help, even though the Reapers have proved themselves a threat? Fine, I'll unite the galaxy without you. Even then, she believes she would be nothing without her crew, past and present - a ragtag bunch that Shepard considers friends, if not family.

As the saying goes, though, she is "only human". She has a temper that will rear its head if she feels someone is messing her around, especially if she's on a time limit, or if anyone on her crew takes unnecessary risks (she's a hypocrite for this). Due to her experiences over the course of the games, she additionally has an incredibly short fuse when it comes to warnings being ignored/downplayed, especially if this is done for petty reasons, i.e. political manoeuvring or trying to save face.

In game terms she's a Paragade, which is a blend of the virtuous (Paragon) and ruthless (Renegade) morality paths, with a preference for the former. Despite this, first impressions can be intimidating; Shepard is tall for a human woman (6'2") and carries herself with a confidence that can be disconcerting. She has an intense stare too, her eyes having been replaced with synthetic ones that have a red, pinprick glow at the very centre. That said, she is typically affable towards people who haven't given her a reason to be otherwise.

WHAT IS A DRIVING FORCE YOUR CHARACTER HAS? WHAT GOALS DO THEY HAVE, WHAT MOTIVATES THEM, ETC?

Shepard is influenced and motivated by what happened before the start of the games, and the scope of this mission to fight against injustice and protect civilians grew larger and larger over the course of her story. The pipe dream ideal she fights for is a long-lasting peace between all races in the galaxy, though Shepard doesn't know how to be anything but a soldier and would chafe against civilian life. Had things been different, she would have likely kept going until she had been forced to retire.

As part of this, a side goal is to amass wealth with the aim of affording better armour, weapons and upgrades for herself and her squad. The best defence is to take your enemies out before they can even pull the trigger, after all. But these things aren't cheap and unfortunately, despite all her achievements, being a famous soldier doesn't make the wage she gets any higher.

This means she can be quite shrewd when it comes to money saving opportunities. When recognized by a store owner who requested a vocal endorsement in exchange for a large discount on their goods, Shepard then went door-to-door offering the same to other stores with an identical script ("I'm Commander Shepard, and this is my favourite store on the Citadel"). She walked away with a bunch of discounted goods and didn't stick around to see the fallout of this particular bit of mischief.

In Escordvi, Shepard's goals will be similar to those in her original reality, but with a more adventurous twist. Now there's not an all-consuming threat of genocide resting on her shoulders, she'll be looking for a (mostly) new crew to settle in with, while eventually enjoying her freedom from impending doom in this new world... though, she has promised her boyfriend that she will leave it to someone else should the need for self-sacrifice arise.

She may also go for her own ship in the distant future.

WHAT ARE THEIR FLAWS AS A CHARACTER? WHAT IS SOMETHING THEY'VE MESSED UP, OR HAVE DONE THAT THEY REGRET?

The final decision she made as part of the games will always be a shadow over her conscience, especially as she didn't get to see how everything turned out. Even if she did, the guilt of wiping out inorganic life in exchange for the death of the Reapers (killing the Normandy's AI EDI, among possibly billions of geth) isn't something she will ever make peace with. In her mind, she will always be chasing what ifs, convinced that there was a better option that she didn't reach hard enough for, bitter that she was so beaten and broken at the end that she couldn't see it.

Shepard is, at the end of the day, deeply traumatized by a lot of things that have happened in her life, and tired of the weight that has been on her shoulders for so long. The only real open manifestation of this trauma is recklessness, of throwing herself in danger and the line of fire to protect those she cares about... and then chewing their ear off about doing the same for her.

OPTIONAL: WHAT IS SOMETHING UNIQUE AND INTERESTING ABOUT THEM, OR WHAT IS A FUN LITTLE TIDBIT THAT SETS THEM APART FROM THE CROWD?

As mentioned previously, Shepard's body has been through a lot and not everything survived her death at the beginning of Mass Effect 2 ("When I first saw you, you were nothing but meat and tubes"). Her being almost entirely bionic in one way or another is only obvious from her eyes, but when it's dark, you can see a dim red glow along her jawline. Biochemically, this means she's a heavyweight when it comes to alcohol, drugs and poison - she wakes up mid-revival at the start of ME2 because of her resistance to anaesthetic.

She also thinks she's a great driver and an excellent dancer. Both of these statements are false, as all of her crew can attest.

Abilities & Inventory:

Shepard is an Infiltrator, a class that blends combat, tech and stealth to disable and dispatch enemies as quickly as possible. She specialises in pistols and sniper rifles, thus is a threat at both short and long-range when armed. Even without weapons, she is strong and isn't afraid to use her fists, anything close at hand, or her head to beat someone down.

With a working omni-tool, Shepard is able to cloak herself to become temporarily invisible. She can also: change the ammo of her weapons to use disruptor (effective against shields and machines) or cryogenic rounds, sabotage weapons and hack synthetics, throw a ball of flame, and summon a two-pronged blade that sparks with electricity. On top of that, the omni-tool can be used for hacking in general, but other than getting through electronic doors, manual hacking is outside Shepard's wheelhouse.

Shepard will arrive in Escordvi with:

N7 Armor (badly damaged)
"Interlocking plates of thick, ablative ceramic plates. Designed to be light, effective, and easily repaired."

Omni-tool (broken)
"An Omni-tool is a multipurpose diagnostic and manufacturing tool as well as a computer used for a variety of civilian and battlefield tasks, such as hacking, decryption, or repair."

Black Widow sniper rifle (broken)
"Heavy for a sniper rifle, the Black Widow's firepower more than compensates for its encumbrance."

M-11 Suppressor heavy pistol (broken)
"... the product of the Alliance's Offensive Handgun Project that developed an infiltration weapon to be used in close-quarters situations where silence is key."

ARMADA SELECTION

Paladins is the perfect fit for Shepard. For a start, it basically has the same agenda as the Alliance navy: exploring and settling uninhabited new worlds for the betterment of mankind and preserving galactic stability, including upholding law and order. Secondly: Garrus, her partner and a member of her former crew, is already with the Paladins. Chasing down criminals with her right-hand man sounds like a good life to Shepard.
